Mexico City might seem like a tough destination when you’re traveling with little kids, but with the right planning, it can be a truly amazing experience for the whole family. From hands-on museums and classic ice cream shops to hotels with pools, the city offers tons of child-friendly options to explore comfortably and without stress. Here’s our guide to help make your trip as smooth and enjoyable as possible.

Mexico City has something for every kind of family – and for every age, even the littlest travelers.
Mexico City has something for every kind of family – and for every age, even the littlest travelers.

Where to stay

A successful family trip starts with a great place to stay. Here are three solid hotel options by area:

  1. Historic Center:

Hilton Mexico City Reforma – Located right across from Alameda Central, this hotel is perfect for families. It has a pool, spacious rooms, buffet breakfast, and an unbeatable location to explore the center on foot.

  2. Paseo de la Reforma:

Fiesta Americana Reforma – Large rooms, a pool, and a secure location on the city’s main avenue. Great for getting to places like Chapultepec or Polanco, whether by car or walking.

  3. La Condesa:

Hotel Andaz Condesa – A boutique hotel with a small pool, a cozy game room with board games, a pet-friendly rooftop, and a perfect location. Just steps away from kid-friendly restaurants and parks like Parque México and Parque España.

I love CDMX: What to do with young kids

Historic Center:

  • Stroll through Alameda Central: wide, safe, with space to run and rest.

  • Dulcería Celaya: a beautiful old-time candy store full of traditional Mexican treats.

  • Breakfast at Café de Tacuba: freshly baked bread, hot chocolate, and kid-friendly options.

  • Lunch at El Cardenal (either inside the Hilton or by Bellas Artes): high-quality traditional Mexican food.

  • Quick stop at the Zócalo and Metropolitan Cathedral: impressive architecture and easy to navigate with a stroller.

Note: The city center isn’t the most kid-friendly area, but these spots are worth the visit.

Chapultepec:

  • Chapultepec Zoo: recently renovated, spacious, free, and full of animals from around the world.

  • Train or boat rides in the lake.

  • Playgrounds throughout the park.

Polanco and Nuevo Polanco:

  • Inbursa Aquarium: small but entertaining and educational.

  • Soumaya Museum: free admission, not specifically for kids but worth a short visit.

  • Hello Kitty Café at Plaza Carso: a cute themed spot for a sweet break little ones will love.

Santa Fe:

  • Kidzania: a mini-city where kids can try out real-life roles like pilots, firefighters, doctors, and even make gansitos. Best for ages 4 and up. Plan for 3 to 4 hours.

  • Santa Fe Mall: visit the shops, eat at restaurants with kids’ play areas (top floor), or just walk around after Kidzania.

Condesa and Colonia Roma:

  • Walk the Amsterdam Circuit: calm, tree-lined streets, great for strollers.

  • Parque México and Parque España: playgrounds and open spaces for running, biking, or playing.

  • Foro Lindbergh: a spot for playing ball, riding bikes, or grabbing cotton candy.

  • Roxy Ice Cream: soft, traditional flavors in a retro setting.

  • Nona Restaurant: Italian food with a great kids’ menu (the bolognese pasta is a hit!).

  • Dessert at El Moro: classic churros with hot chocolate or ice cream.

  • Lardo: a great place for family breakfast or dinner – don’t miss the fresh bread.

  • Rosetta Bakery (Roma): a calm, lovely spot for breakfast with little ones.

Papalote Children’s Museum:

A fully interactive museum built just for kids, with sensory, scientific and tech-based exhibits. Perfect for 2–3 hours of fun and learning.

Tips for visiting Mexico City with kids

  • Use Uber: it’s reliable, but bring a booster or car seat.

  • Bring a lightweight travel stroller – you’ll be walking a lot.

  • Best times to visit:

    • Easter Week: the city empties out and traffic is light.

    • Holiday season: mild weather, festive decorations and lights all over.

Mexico City has so much to offer even the youngest travelers. With good planning, the right routes, and plenty of snack breaks, you’ll enjoy a family trip full of culture, flavor, play, and discovery. Take the plunge – explore the city with your kids!

I was in tears even before playing the video! Recently started watching Bluey and to be honest I am saviouring every episode, making sure not to rush through them. Luce as a kid would have love it too! Without all the sometimes extreme drama cartoons such as "Candy", "Peline" and the anime series called in Spanish "La Ranita Demetan" displayed. I also remember feeling sad and stressed after watching some of them...But Bluey is so not like that. I am sure this is appreciated by kids and parents equally. Cheers to all healthy, innocent and non invasive copying mechanisms! And thanks for sharing this one! 😍
