Series rec: One day

“One day” is a Netflix series that follows the lives of Emma and Dexter, two friends who meet on the day of their college graduation in 1988 and continue to meet every July 15 for the next two decades. Through their annual encounters, the series explores the evolution of their relationship, the ups and downs of love and friendship, and how their lives intertwine and change over time. With powerful performances and a moving story, "One Day" is an emotional roller coaster that will keep you hooked from the first episode to the last.

Premiered on Netflix on February 8, 2024 and directed by Molly Manners, this romantic comedy consists of 14 episodes ranging from 20 to 40 minutes in length, making it agile and easy to watch.

Based on David Nicholls' novel of the same name, published in 2009, this fully emotive series will leave you reflecting and musing even after the last episode ends. With Ambika Mod and Leo Woodall in the leading roles, this serie takes us through two decades of friendship, love and loss. Mod shines with a captivating interpretation as Emma Morley, while Woodall captivates the public with his charm and vulnerability as Dexter Mayhew.

It is worth noting the great soundtrack that accompanies each episode taking you on a journey through the musical hits spanning two decades. An absolute delight (and walk down memory lane) for all of us born in the 80’s, or earlier, and who clearly remember every song, every fashion trend, and life in general, happening right then.

The series has received positive reviews, highlighting the touching performances and the palpable chemistry among the protagonists. In addition, according to The Wrap newspaper, it was the most watched series worldwide in the week of February 12 with almost 10 million views.

For those who have read Nicholls' novel, they will find that the adaptation captures the very essence of the book, although with some differences in the plot and the development of the characters. The serie manages to maintain the essence of the relationship between Emma and Dexter, while exploring more deeply its ups and downs over the years.

It is worth mentioning that this is not the first media adaptation that has been made of Nicholls' novel. In 2011, Lone Scherfing directed the film adaptation of this novel, with Nicholls himself participating as the screenwriter, starring Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess. This is also a masterful work although the series covers even more details and events that the film fails to capture.

Although I have never read the book, I had already seen the film which, like this last series, captivated my heart and left me thinking about it even years after having seen it.

However, I liked the serie so much better. I identified a lot with the depiction of Emma's character, with her journey from adolescence to adult life, to a stage in which I find myself, with her energy to discover, to dream and to always move forward. I loved the cinematography, the filming locations, the vibe, once again, the music... it's a completely nostalgic trip with shades of comedy. "One Day" is a serie that touches deep emotional fibers, I found myself laughing, crying and reflecting on love, friendship and second chances.

It is definitely a must watch for those who are looking for a moving and genuine story that will stay with them long after they finish watching it.

I was in tears even before playing the video! Recently started watching Bluey and to be honest I am saviouring every episode, making sure not to rush through them. Luce as a kid would have love it too! Without all the sometimes extreme drama cartoons such as "Candy", "Peline" and the anime series called in Spanish "La Ranita Demetan" displayed. I also remember feeling sad and stressed after watching some of them...But Bluey is so not like that. I am sure this is appreciated by kids and parents equally. Cheers to all healthy, innocent and non invasive copying mechanisms! And thanks for sharing this one! 😍
